Re: Day 6: (Ab)normal Days

Post by Laura Besley on Mon Jun 17, 2013 6:30 pm

It was getting to be a while since someone was in the Nurse's office with Laura, and she was beginning to get uncomfortable, partially from the mess and all the dried blood, but also from not getting up and moving around for the past 16 hours or so. Desperate for some way to get around, Laura looked around the room again, and saw exactly what she was looking for.

In the opposite corner of the room, tucked away next to a shelf of medical supplies, was a wheelchair. It didn't look fancy or anything, but considering her circumstances, Laura didn't feel like complaining. The only problem was getting to it, really. Laura could barely move, and her entire lower body was useless. She wondered if it was even worth risking injury to get to it.

Laura shrugged. She figured that she probably wasn't going to be alive much longer, anyway. "Might as well get one good crawling spree in before her time came," she thought to herself, and clutched the edges of her bed, using her arm strength to drag herself off of it. The action took away all of her energy. "Thank god no one's here to watch this."

"Ah it's fine, don't worry!" She said, smiling reassuringly at her friend.

"um...I don't know what we should do. Up to you, I guess." She shrugged and walked out of the library, feeling slightly bad of possibly leaving Oscar alone - she still wasn't completely sure he was ever there at all - but glad that she was returning to the world where things made relative sense.

Adda stretched a little as she walked.

"Wanna check out the rec room?  Maybe they have a board game or something... It feels weird to say something like that, given the circumstances..." She laughed.

"Who knows?  Maybe we can test our young friendship with Monopoly.  Or just play cards."

Eloise made for the door, as if to knock, but then remembered Laura's current state. Not that she could have been up to much.

She winced a bit, the room's strong scent of cleaners and blood hitting her harder than before. Laura wasn't on the bed.
"Laura? Are you here?!" There was the possibility that monobear had performed a miracle on her and she was running laps in the gym, but it was unlikely. She found her easily enough and a look of shock crept across her tired face. Immediately she was circling around her, dropping the bag and trying to find a way to get her back into the bed. "God, how did you even fall," She sighed, talking to herself, the only ears of the room.

"Rec Room sounds good I always loved board games...maybe the could cheer us up a fraction." she sighed. "A bit of a longshot, but the chance is worth it."

She smiled and walked towards the stairs. "Let's get going, then."

Adda passed through the halls and into the stairwell a step ahead and neared the stairs, clutching the railing.  While she wasn't as shaken up, the sleepless night was starting to take its toll.  Slowly, she began to climb the stairs.

Laura's crawling escapade came to an end as Eloise surrounded her. She felt almost disappointed that her little exercise was finished prematurely, but she had to admit to herself that she probably didn't have enough energy to make it all the way.

With one hand, Laura shooed off Eloise who was circling her, but not forcefully. With the other, she pointed towards the wheelchair in the back of the room, hoping Eloise would get the message.

She headed up the stairs behind Adda, not noticing the fatigue on her other friend. She didn't bother making small talk, instead counting all the steps on her way up. When she reached the top of the stairs, she quickly pulled out her ID to get a glance at the map, confirming her suspicions.

"Right there, then." she said, pointing to the door.

Adda regained more of her normal speed once she was back on normal ground and found herself outside the rec room.  She only took a few steps in before turning to wait for Marci.

Eloise knew the entirety of the Alphabet in sign language, and not much else more. However, she was quick to catch on, despite her near-sleepless night and throbbing head.

"You're crazy," she said, giving an expression that she hoped conveyed the same message. Nevertheless, she grabbed a hold of the wheelchair and moved it closer, turning it behind Laura. She then stood for a few moments to make her strategy.
Eloise stuck out her arm towards Laura, kneeling down so she could use her shoulder as support. All she'd have to do is have Laura hold on and push her into the chair, right?

If only she was strong enough to carry her, this would be a lot more simple.

Whether Laura wasn't smart enough to understand Eloise's plan, or her concussion was getting in the way of her thinking, Laura had no idea what her friend was trying to do. She steadied the wheelchair by pressing her palms against the seat, then slowly and shakily drew herself upward and over the chair, ending up with her chest slumped against the chair and her face pressed against the seat. She figured it was close enough for starters.

Eloise withdrew her arm, seeing Laura didn't need her help. Or until she plopped down into the wheelchair face-first, she thought so.
"Okay, err..." She reassessed her plan.
"We should probably lock the thing first," She announced, finding that saying things out loud helped her work her way through the process. And honestly, the wheelchair looked like a death trap. It wasn't the most stable thing to begin with.

After locking it she offered her arm again, tapping Laura's hand so she could try to turn around.

Herbert stormed out, looking utterly furious. His face was red as he stalked back to the kitchen, rage totally consuming him. He slammed his hands on the table, making a dissatisfied grunt. Taking a second to silently seethe, he looked up, and blinked at David.

Then his rage hit him again. He snarled, gripping the side of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. "Tha gently caress that fuckin' bear said!" He screamed, "Ah don't even like Laura!"

He shot his hands up, not really thinking due to how angry he was. "Ah fuckin like ya, David! That bear needs contacts fer god's sake! How obvious do ah hafta make it!"

And suddenly, his expression of rage turned into one of surprise. "Shi-" He hissed, pulling his hands down and across his chest, looking away quickly, an almost embarrassed look on his face.

This time Laura gratefully took her friends arm for support, and used it to turn herself onto her side, but she still wasn't quite in the chair. She reached both of her arms up into the air, and broke her self-imposed rule of silence to give clear instructions. "Could you pull me up onto it?" she asked earnestly. Honestly, Laura was getting tired of the ordeal.

Hearing Laura's voice again surprised Eloise to a small degree and she smiled slightly. She took Laura's arms and tried as best as she could to slide Laura back into the chair, turning her around properly. It was pretty tiring to someone with almost no sleep.
"There." She sighed when the ordeal was, as she hoped, over. Giving herself a moment to collect herself Laura remembered the bag.

She took out the apple and held it up, tilting her head in question, asking if Laura wanted it.

After taking a moment to relax, as she was completely exhausted from exerting herself to get into the wheelchair, Laura nodded briskly and took the apple from Eloise. She nodded her head in thanks and took a couple chomps into the fruit. She had only had the bagel and water from Adda for breakfast, so Laura was starving as she ate.

"So where you headed now?" Laura asked between bites. She had left the paper on her bed and didn't really feel like grabbing it, so she'd have to endure her own voice, or lack thereof, for the time being.

Marci headed in after Adda and closed the door behind them both, taking a look around.

"Well this is certainly uplifting compared to the rest of this school. It almost feels like fun and games," she mused, looking at a set up chess board. She never was good at that game. She looked up at the TV set up.

"...I doubt that works. It can't possibly work, right?"

Adda shrugged and walked over.

"Well, it doesn't hurt to try it, right?"  She pressed the power button and the TV buzzed to life.  It seemed to be playing the movie Waterworld.  She took the remote resting on top of the TV and tried to change the channel, but everything else resulted in irritating static.  Adda turned the TV off again.

"I guess it works, then.  Kinda."  She walked over to a shelf full of board games.

"What are you game for?"

David was hunched over in his chair, wide eyed at Herbert's raucous screaming in the kitchen. His eyes flicked around the room for an escape route. He listened to Herbert's rant, trying to make words out of his screeching that sounded kind of like an angry monkey or something.

Did the bear say he liked Laura or something? Why was that pissing him off so much? Wait, did he just hear his own name somewhere in that rant? He looked at Herbert and raised an eyebrow curiously - his mouth was open and appeared to be attempting to form some word or another, but no sound came out.

"Was I supposed to hear that?" he said after a second, looking at Herbert nervously.

Thank god he didn't hear that.

Herbert sighed, thankful for that at least.

"Nah. Nawt at all." he said, not even making eye contact with David. He wasn't going to say that again, especially while he was perfectly sane.

"As expected. Interesting that they'd let us play movies, though. I wonder if there's any better ones lying around." She shrugged. "Probably not."

She turned to the rack of board games and peered around. "You mentioned Monopoly, right? We could try and play a quick game." she laughed after a second. "Though that entire concept is a bit redundant iIguess.

Eloise handed her the juice box as well. She almost tossed it to her, but decided Laura probably wasn't up for much more exertion just yet. The paper wasn't more than a few steps away.

I dont know. I was talking to David and Herbert earlier, before my meeting. Something was off though.

Eloise wanted to visit the pool, but she didn't want to tell that to Laura. Half because Laura wouldn't be able to go and Half because if Laura really wanted to, Eloise had almost no doubt she'd try crawling up the stairs to get there.

The library looks like my next stop.
She handed Laura the paper.

Laura quickly sipped the juice box dry before tossing it into the corner of the room. No point keeping the place clean, that could be Monobear's job. She was almost afraid to read Eloise's reply because she knew that no matter how much crawling she did, she wouldn't be able to go up and sets of stairs. She was relieved to see that her friend had written down the library.

"Oh, cool! I can actually come with you!" she said aloud. It was still pretty unnerving, but Laura wasn't as freaked out by not hearing her voice anymore, and it was much more convenient, so she decided that she'd keep talking normally.

"Anyway, let's go," she said, unlocking her wheelchair and starting to roll out of the office. "I'm sick of this place."
